I am roughing it on my motorcycle till I can close out business in San Diego. When they pull out, my first task is to ride north on the motorcycle to our old place and clean house. Because of delays with the new rig, we had to move out fast to avoid an extra month of rent.
We left loads of things scattered on the floor including some furniture and many things we actually needed to keep. Much of what we could not keep was in good shape, just in need of a home. Well, thankfully we had some amazing neighbors happy to help. I gave away some big items to neighbors who spoke no english, then one of their grandkids translated what I was doing for them. I blinked and the apartment was full of Mexican grandmothers, all with their own cleaning supplies, making everything SPOTLESS! The grandchild who translated for me stayed and helped find folks who needed what had to give away In the end I declined dinner with one of the neighbors and left the keys in the office knowing the place was in as good or better shape than when we took the keys.
The place we left: That there were 6250 people per square mile was readily apparent. There we gang tags on the walls and drug dealers on the corner. We heard gunshots several nights a week, same with drunken fights and domestic squabbles almost daily. It also has some of the closest family neighborhood bonds I have ever seen. It has vibrant life; mariachi music most weekends, children playing outside sunrise to sunset, families cooking delicious-smelling home-cooked meals and always, always you could see the young helping the elderly. Despite the apparent crime, we never felt unsafe. Just CROWDED.
