The question was asked in a group on Facebook;
’We’ve been wintering in southern USA and want to know if it would be safe to travel in our RV back home?’
My response
We are traveling full-time boondockers without a home-base. We started northeast from Georgia on March 2 with original plans to go north to the furthest eastern border and then from east to west through Canada this year. By mid-March we were in southern Pennsylvania where we got booted from a state forest. We decided to change course for the Dakotas/Montana area to hopefully find locations we can hole up for longer periods of time with less people around to get infected by or to infect. We arrived in South Dakota on the 7th of April. For several reasons we move slow, normally. We traveled much faster than we otherwise would have. As we moved west we faced increased difficulties using both Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome memberships. We had to use Walmart WAY more than we like. We found that states were placing Stay At Home orders just after we departed.
My recommendation is to call about a day to 3 days in advance to check status of any location you wish to overnight, be it a Walmart, Cracker Barrel, a RV Park, or campground. Be conscientious of yourself, others and what you touch. Clean items as you go before and after touching; gas pumps, door handles, sewage/water connections and so on. Wear a mask in public, even if its homemade. Stay out of major cities, be in any city very little, take the less used highways and be respectful of the truckers.
Safe travels. We have an American right to travel, especially to home, if you have a home-base to which to return.
